By the dawn of the Regency period, the Industrial Revolution had already begun to dramatically transform Western civilization. In 1814, George Stephenson continued this trend with his invention of the steam locomotive. In addition, the iron, coal, and cotton industries flourished during this period, propelled by the use of the steam engine as a source of power. Medical science gained notable strides with the inventions of the stethoscope and galvanometer. The Regency era also saw the discoveries of lithium, cadmium, selenium, aluminum, beryllium, thorium, and vanadium. Isomorphism, electromagnetism, thermoelectricity and Ohm's Law were also developed during this time. Other notable accomplishments included Sir Charles Wheatstone's demonstration of sound reproduction and Michael Faraday's success in liquefying chlorine.
