Summary
Gaston Leroux's classic story, as adapted to the musical theater by Andrew Lloyd Webber,
comes to the screen in this brilliantly acted, lush film adaptation. Deformed since birth, an embittered musical genius
known only as the Phantom (Gerard Butler) lives in the sewers underneath the Paris Opera House. He falls
in love with a young chorus singer, Christine (Emmy Rossum), and privately tutors her
while terrorizing the rest of the opera house. When Christine replaces the opera's diva, Carlotta (Minnie Driver),
she becomes a star in her own right, and also becomes reacquainted with her childhood
sweetheart, Raoul (Patrick Wilson). Christine and Raoul's renewed love sparks the Phantom's
jealousy, and leads him into an enraged attempt to possess Christine forever. This gorgeous film version,
truly a feast for the eyes, is worthy of the Broadway musical.
This film is rated PG-13 for brief violent images.
