This lavish costume drama, set in Baroque France, is based on the 1782 novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses
by Choderlos de Laclos. It tells a story of passion, deception, love and betrayal. Glenn Close stars as the Marquise de Merteuil, a scheming Parisian widow who wagers a bet with her former love, the Vicomte de Valmont (played by John Malkovich). They attempt to corrupt a recently married woman, Madame de Tourvel (Michelle Pfeiffer). However, the wager soon goes awry as Valmont ultimately finds himself falling in love with Madame de Tourvel, and the Marquise de Mertuil plots revenge. The acting in this film is excellent and the costume and scenery are beautiful, but it is tainted by excessive nudity and adult situations.
This film is rated R.
