Heath Ledger stars in this swashbuckling tale about William Thatcher, a peasant squire who takes up the identity of his master when the knight suffers an untimely demise. Although only men of noble blood are allowed to compete, William jousts in his place and finds that he has a natural skill. Using the alias of Sir Ulrich Von Lichtenstein, William enters to compete at a jousting tournament. He nearly wins, except to lose out to the evil Count Adhemar. While a the tournament, Williams meets Jocelyn (Shannon Sassomon), and vows to win her heart. The movie combines medieval jousting with contemporary slang and a modern rock soundtrack. It is enjoyable for an engaging plot, appealing characters, and plenty of laughs. Supporting performances by Rufus Sewell (Adhemar) and Paul Bettany (Geoffrey Chaucer) are also praiseworthy.
This film is rated PG-13 for action violence, some nudity and brief sex-related dialogue.
