Summary
Based on the Barbara Cartland novel of the same name, "A Hazard of Hearts" relates the story of
compulsive gambler Sir Giles Staverley, who upon losing his estate, realizes his most important
asset: his daughter, Serena (Helena Bonham Carter). In a final game, he bets his daughter's hand
in marriage to the evil Lord Wrotham. When he loses, Sir Giles sacrifies his own life rather
than return home and tell his daughter that he has lost her in a game of dice. Lord Vulcan,
who has witnessed the events, takes pity on Serena, whom he has never met, and challenges
Lord Wrotham to another game of dice, in which the winner takes both Staverley Court and
Serena. Upon arriving at Staverley Court, Lord Vulcan discovers Serena is more beautiful than he ever imagined.
