Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson star in this adaptation of Tracy Chevalier's novel about Griet, a
young woman who works as a maid in the home of Johannes Vermeer and becomes
the model for his most famous work.
Johansson plays the young Griet, the daughter of a former tile painter who is sent across town to
serve the Vermeer household. Vermeer (Firth), a brooding painter, is drawn to Griet's
quiet loveliness. Though few words pass between them, their mutual eye for aesthetics
develops into strong attraction and deep appreciation. Her pure complexion also
attracts Vermeer's wealthy patron and sole means of support, Van Ruijven (Tom Wilkinson), as well as
a young butcher Pieter (Cillian Murphy). When Van Ruijven commissions Vermeer to paint Griet
with the intent that he will have her for himself before it is finished, Griet must somehow
secretly pose for the crucial painting without the knowledge of Vermeer's wife,
avoid Van Ruijven's grasp, and protect herself from the cruel gossip of the world of a 17th century servant.
This film is rated PG-13 for some sexual content.
