William Wyler's 1959 epic tells the story of a Jewish nobleman named Judah Ben Hur (Charlton Heston). Judah's relationship with his childhood friend, Messala, disintegrates when Judah refuses to cooperate with Messala, now a Roman officer, and Rome's "domestication" of the Jewish people. Judah is then forced into slavery aboard a ship where he serves in the galley. During a tortuous storm, Judah saves the life of a Roman officer, who then begins to restore Judah's life. Judah's first priority is to discover what has happened to his mother and sister and then to avenge their suffering. In the background of this dramatic story, complete with a heart-thumping chariot race, is the awe-inspiring figure of Jesus of Nazareth. "Ben-Hur" is the story of one man's redemption in the light of the Man who has come to redeem all peoples. This is a wonderful classic film and an example of movie-making at its finest.
