Summary
Francois Ozon adapts Elizabeth Taylor's 1957 novel Angel in lavish Edwardian era style.
Romola Garai stars as Angel Deverell, a determined and imaginative young woman who dreams of
becoming a famous author and buying Paradise House, the expansive estate which her middle class upbringing can
only dream of acquiring. But before long, she ends up making good on her boasts and moves into Paradise House, which she
begins to transform with her crass and unrefined taste.
She soon meets and falls in love with a bohemian painter named Esme (Michael Fassbender), who is the
brother of her assistant Nora (Lucy Russell). The two marry but find brief happiness before the war breaks out.
As the story unfolds, we see Angel as a shallow and self-centered young woman who lives in the mind of her own
imagination and not in reality.
